Presentation title:

"A Mom and Pop Friendly Home Area Network," by Abraham Y. Chen, VP of Engineering, Avinta Communications, Inc.

Abstract:

After three decades of rapid development, the digital revolution that started from personal computer, has evolved along with the Internet and gotten to almost every aspect of our daily life. Most of these products rely upon some form of interconnection or networking to perform their respective functions. Each group of devices has been more or less independently developed and deployed. The resultant Home Area Network (HAN) today is an ever expanding complex ecosystem that hardly anyone can fully comprehend, let alone expecting consumers to embrace. For example, just in the Power Line Carrier (PLC) category, there are X-10, CEBus, LonWorks, HomePlug, DS2, etc. In general, each design does not consider coexisting with one another. Yet, individually, they may not fully satisfy the diverse applications that a home may need.

Lately, with the SmartGrid gathering momentum, even home electrical appliances need be networked to support the Green Energy initiatives, as well. Focusing on the low data rate characteristics of such applications, technologies like ZigBee, Zwaves, etc. are being promoted. This trend of specialized HANs adds even more confusion to the less tech-savvy consumers and homeowners ¨C hence the adoption is slow.

The first goal of a HAN should be transparent to consumers. Multiple applications, regardless what mix a home-owner may choose to have, can then share the same facility. This talk will report the research efforts that identify a common thread among existing diversified home networking approaches. The author believes by going back to addressing the needs of homeowners and leveraging widely accepted standard, a consumer can confidently manage his/her own HAN that is modeled with TCP/IP over Ethernet. This architecture, AvintaNET is fully realizable with mature technologies already available in merchant ICs.

The philosophy behind this approach is equally applicable to future new networking technologies assuring that consumers will not be burdened to learn something different frequently. The core subsystems of this module provide time-invariant functions. They are candidates to become a System On Chip (SOC) for lowering the cost of long term deployment.

Abraham Y. Chen

Mr. Chen has forty years of experience in communication and computer industries, including major R&D organizations such as RCA Sarnoff Lab, Lincoln Lab, Raytheon, Bell Labs, and Bell Northern Research. He specializes in the design and implementation of data network, wireless engineering, and telephone systems for residential settings, and has an in-depth knowledge in SOHO (Small Office Home Office) environments. Abe is a seasoned innovator in the communications field with eleven US and four foreign patents granted.

Abe holds BS degree in Electrophysics from National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan, and MS & EE degrees in EE from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He is currently the VP of Engineering, Avinta Communications, Inc., Milpitas, CA, manufacturer of SOHO communication networking system. Before Avinta, he was Chief Operating Officer & VP, Product Development, Teletronics International, Inc., Rockville, MD, where he implemented a small long range wireless PABX for rural areas. Earlier, he was VP, Areanex Technology, Inc., Cupertino, CA, developer of SOHO and Home-Automation PABX. In the payphone deregulation years, he was Director of Engineering, Tatung Telecom Corp., Palo Alto, CA, in charge of smart payphone products.
