Career Development Forum Series #3 – The N Habits of Effective Time Management (Panel Discussion) 

We are way into 2010. After making all the new-year resolutions, do you still find yourself asking, "Why am I so busy and yet have not accomplished anything?" or "How can I use the minimum time to achieve the maximum results?" or "What are some effective ways to manage my time?" 

If you are wondering about such questions, we have some answers for you. Come and join your fellow alumni and other friends at this interactive panel. Our successful speakers will share with you some practical habits in time management. You will also be able to make more friends and network with other professionals.

Speakers' Bio: 

Elizabeth Xu, Ph.D.  

Dr. Elizabeth Xu is managing partner at Business Innovation Services, LLC. A new investment, research, advisory and leadership development firm that provides investors and companies a strategy and vision to accelerate the development and access of next generation technologies and business models.  

Prior to BIS, Elizabeth was the Senior Vice President of Product Development and World Wide Support for Vitria Technology where she was responsible for Vitria's Product Development, Product Management, World Wide Customer Support, Education, Professional Services and IT Operations (6 major organizations, 350+ professionals, in 8 global locations, over 2/3 of total company resource and total revenue).  She started two remote development centers from scratch and built them into successful development and support centers. As an innovative engineering leader, she drove her teams and built three generations of award-winning products used by many Fortune 500 companies. She joined Vitria in 2000 from IBM, and was promoted to be the VP of Engineering in 2005, and SVP of Product Development and WW Support in 2006.  

At IBM Elizabeth held several managerial positions, in which she acquired deep knowledge in large-scale enterprise software development. IBM also provided her with solid management skills and leadership training, such as one year of management training jointly developed by Harvard Business School and IBM management school and eight project management courses provided by George Washington University for IBM managers. She became systematic in developing both high quality products and highly productive teams.  

Elizabeth has expanded her efforts in elevating leadership skills beyond her organizations and companies she worked for by teaching in-depth leadership classes as well as making presentations to different community organizations and alumni groups. Her well-received presentation "Ten Steps to a Successful Career" provides building blocks for individuals who pursue meaningful careers. She has presented at Stanford University, Yahoo, HP, Microsoft, AAA, Cisco, Google, Ascend, CAAN, PKU and many other organizations. She serves on the boards of National Asian Association SF (NAASF, top Asian young professional association) and Asian American Multi-technology Association (AAMA, top Asian business association). Elizabeth is the founding member of Corporate Executive Initiative (CEI, a group of bay Area entrepreneurs, ex & current CEOs, SVPs, VPs) coaching, mentoring young Asian executives and creating awareness in local corporations in need of higher corporate levels participation, She also serves as an advisor for several other professional organizations.  

Elizabeth holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has earned an M.S. in Atmospheric Science and B.S. in Space Physics from Peking University. 

Haiyan Song 

Haiyan Song has served as the Vice President of Engineering at ArcSight since September 2005. From 2004 to September 2005, Haiyan served as vice president of engineering at SenSage, a provider of log management and compliance auditing applications. From 2003 to 2004, Ms. Song has served as vice president of engineering and support at Omniva Policy Systems, a provider of secure messaging solutions, acquired by Liquid Machines. Ms. Song led engineering organizations at various enterprise software and service providers including Ketera Technology, Escalate and Informix. As Executive Director at Informix for the system management product division, she led the development of trusted RDBMS server products.  

Ms. Song studied at Tsinghua University in Beijing and holds a B.S. in Computer Science and M.S. in Computer Engineering from Florida Atlantic University. 

Larry Chang 

Larry currently advises the CFO and COO of Haier.  He was the executive sponsor for a number of Asia-American employee network organizations both inside HP and among California corporations.  In 2008, Larry joined the Board of Ascend and currently is the co-President of the Northern California Chapter of Ascend.  After 32 years of service to HP, Larry took early retirement in June of 2007.  Since joining HP in 1975, he has held a variety of assignments including:  IT Manager at Agilent, Field F&A Controller for the Intercontinental Region, VP of Supply Chain and Distribution for the Personal Systems Group, and VP & CFO for the Personal Computer Organization.  Prior to the Compaq acquisition, Larry was VP & CFO for the Computing Systems Group. 

Larry received his bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Michigan and his masters of business administration from the University of California Berkeley.
